Teacher Training

Teaching for 18 years, the heart and soul of my work over the past several years has been training and mentoring the next generation of yoga teachers.  I’ve served on the faculty of several regionally, nationally- and internationally renowned teacher training programs, including Jivamukti Yoga’s 300-hour TT program  (2016), San Francisco’s own Yoga Tree 200 and 500-hour TT programs (2012-present), in addition to one of the most well-respected and fully accredited TT programs in the Mid-Atlantic, hosted by Flow Yoga Center in Washington DC. My specialty areas are alignment, sequencing, the art of of assisting — in which I’ve written 2 books — and also the subtle body — i.e., how we address the multi-dimensional subtleties and nuances housed in the chakras, koshas, the pranic body and within one’s own unique karmic footprint.

My own earliest training was in Hatha yoga (with teachers Lex Gillan as well as Michael Carroll at the Kripalu Center) and Ashtanga Yoga (with David Swenson), followed by training in Vinyasa flow (with Shiva Rea) and Jivamukti Yoga (with my primary teachers Sharon Gannon and David Life). What I love best about training is the opportunity to inter-weave elements and insights from all these great schools of yoga.

Testimonials

Who knew the strength equal to the roots a thousand year old oak tree could reside in such a petite frame?! I’m blown away by her presence, her ability to read the class’ energy, and be both professional and silly. What was obvious to me and the rest of the class was her complete commitment to our learning. I would take any opportunity to study with her in the future.

The BEST. Jill is incredible and I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to learn from her. Not only did her presence brighten the classroom every time we met, but she had a way of bringing our group closer together. It was during this section of the training that we became close, built trust and began to lean on one another. I would take another training with Jill in a heartbeat.

Not only does she radiate the most amazing loving serenity, but in all her teachings and cues the long and profound experience of her formation shines through. As a trainer she stands out. She will deepen your knowledge and practice as a yoga teacher.

Key benefits of the (Yoga Tree 500HR) program included Jill’s expertise and knowledge in the field, and the way she structured the program to help us integrate the practice concepts each day. She leveraged the expertise in the room to allow both herself and all of us to share knowledge and best practices that I still use and think about every day when I teach. I was treated as a professional and both as a student and teacher, required to both learn new content and SHARE my prior experiences with the group to enrich the experiences of all of my cohort. I just deeply and truly appreciated Jill, her approach, and the experience as a whole. She left me feeling ready to call myself an expert in my field with my 500 hour certification completed.

Jill is amazing. I LOVED how she conducted our classes. I especially liked that she let us demo and work through the poses ourselves, as it felt like more of a learning experience. The round robins were also extremely helpful as they let us work with many different body types in a short period of time. Finally, I loved Jill’s calm, yet direct way of communicating with us.

Knowledge, magnificent demos, taught much practical knowledge applicable to all yoga classes, gave great variety of adjustment variations, kept the class engaged, with fun learning exercises that helped expand our knowledge. I had the most powerful experiences with her as a trainer and felt that our group really bonded under her leadership. Her strength and wisdom are inspiring.

Every time I go out and teach (or do my first attempts, to be honest) I have to think of you and how you supported me and gave me strength to believe in myself. You can’t imagine how important this was and is and will always be.

Dear Jill,  A heartfelt thank you – The week was exhilarating and overfull with information.  I can say for sure that I have grown from the experience, and my public classes already feel transformed.   One key you gave us was to be simple.  Your encouragement to use clear language (and other guidance) was spot on and I was relieved to not rush to comment on everything I saw – rather I picked a few key points and got creative with shedding light and hands onto them.  I know that teaching yoga is not about “fixing” people, yet I worry about alignment and tend to be overly cautious so it was great to get simple for a change. Thank you so much for your unwavering focus. It was a gift.

Her training had an ease and timelessness, and the learning felt completely organic. It consecrated our group and brought us closer together. Watching Jill, we realized what a profound effect we can have teaching our classes, simply by cultivating a compassionate and open environment. We can hold an open space for our student’s personal exploration and healing.

I wanted you to know how inspiring I found you as a person and how much I loved your training. Your teaching style is deliberate, intelligent and focussed.  It was taught by a person who embodies everything I hope one day to share with my students. Compassion, patience, generosity, intuitive judgment, deep experience and a thirst to offer up and teach with absolute positivity.

Jill has been my most influential yoga teacher. I’ve thought about why this might be, but can’t articulate it well. Perhaps it is the pure intention in her yoga practice and her sincere dedication to students. After traveling through a few different yoga communities, these characteristics stand out in her teaching. They are also evident in your students, including those who (now) teach. Thank you for all that you do. Yoga Tree is lucky to have you.

What made the deepest impression on me was when you said that we shouldn’t try to measure the results of our practice on the bodily platform; that the affect of yoga is subtle and works at a deeper level than a superficial analysis will reveal. That shook me out of my recent preoccupation with just the physical aspect of my practice. I can honestly say that I’ve felt inspired to push myself, or I’ve been pushed, further in the classes I’ve had with you than in any class prior.
