Teacher Training

Time flies! Teaching for 18 years now, I’ve watched the yoga industry undergo rapid expansion, changing demographics,  and increasing demands placed on newer and experienced teachers. It’s almost crazy to compare the 2 eras, but there is really a big difference. Back when I got my first certifications, and started teaching at a local gym,  yoga teacher training programs were a pretty limited affair. You most likely took a month off, traveled to one of a handful of places (Kripalu, a Sivananda Ashram, a long pedagogy with Iyengar Yoga, etc). and came back with basic teaching credentials. Now, choices and complexity abound, not just in the U.S. but also in Europe and around the world. There’s a yoga TT program practically on every corner and online.  Then, these questions: Am I ready to be a teacher? Can I turn my love for yoga into a viable career? Do I give up my day job? Where and to whom do I turn for credentialing and C/E?  Who should I train with? The stakes are higher than ever, since becoming a skilled, employable teacher in a now-saturated market requires time away from work and family, MONEY, the right credentials and 100% dedication. And by the way, you need 500HRs minimum… just to get your foot in the door.

I sort of figured it out for myself, and now pay it forward. Mentoring the next generation of yoga teachers is really a sweet spot for me these days, in affiliation with some of the most respected and well-known teacher training programs out there: Yoga Tree in San Francisco (since 2010),  Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Training Program, Baptiste Power of Yoga Foundations Study Program and Flow Yoga Center in Washington, DC, to name a few.

I’m multi-lineage trained, so my lens is wide. This, too is a great bonus.

Every time I go out and teach (or do my first attempts, to be honest) I have to think of you and how you supported me and gave me strength to believe in myself. You can’t imagine how important this was and is and will always be. – Heike T., Munich Germany, Graphic Designer and Jivamukti Yoga Teacher

Dear Jill,  A heartfelt thank you – The week was exhilarating and overfull with information.  I can say for sure that I have grown from the experience, and my public classes already feel transformed.   One key you gave us was to be simple.  Your encouragement to use clear language (and other guidance) was spot on and I was relieved to not rush to comment on everything I saw – rather I picked a few key points and got creative with shedding light and hands onto them.  I know that teaching yoga is not about “fixing” people, yet I worry about alignment and tend to be overly cautious so it was great to get simple for a change. Thank you so much for your unwavering focus on us all week.  It was a gift.   – James A., Mokelumne Hill CA, Artist and Yoga Teacher, Yoga Tree ATT Graduate, 2016

Jill’s training had an ease and timelessness, and the learning felt completely organic. It consecrated our group and brought us closer together. Watching Jill, we realized what a profound effect we can have teaching our classes, simply by cultivating a compassionate and open environment. We can hold an open space for our student’s personal exploration and healing.Brett G. + Sierra K., San Francisco CA, Yoga Tree BTT Graduates, 2015

“I wanted you to know how inspiring I found you as a person and how much I loved your training. Your teaching style was so deliberate, intelligent and focussed. Yet there was much more to it than that and perhaps the soft intangible elements are what I find so heart warming and profound about your work. It was taught by a person who embodies everything I hope one day to share with my students. Compassion, patience, generosity, intuitive judgment, deep experience and a thirst to offer up and teach with absolute positivity.  – Yanti A., New York NY, Owner, Earth Yoga Studio, Master Martial Arts Instructor

Jill has been my most influential yoga teacher. I’ve thought about why this might be, but can’t articulate it well. Perhaps it is the pure intention in her yoga practice and her sincere dedication to students. After traveling through a few different yoga communities, these characteristics stand out in her teaching. They are also evident in your students, including those who (now) teach. Thank you for all that you do. Yoga Tree is lucky to have you. — Sarah Leinecke, Cambridge MA

What made the deepest impression on me was when you said that we shouldn’t try to measure the results of our practice on the bodily platform; that the affect of yoga is subtle and works at a deeper level than a superficial analysis will reveal. That shook me out of my recent preoccupation with just the physical aspect of my practice. I can honestly say that I’ve felt inspired to push myself, or I’ve been pushed, further in the classes I’ve had with you than in any class prior.  – Hari Kirtana Das, Washington DC, Yoga teacher and author, Jivamukti Yoga Teacher

I feel like I have a whole new understanding of my body and others. The training brought us closer together, and has given us a much stronger relationship with our practice. We saw the poses through your eyes, which was a wonderful and life changing experience.  – Diana B., San Francisco CA, Yoga Tree Teacher Training Graduate
